What is BJJ?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art focused on technique, control, and problem-solving rather than strength or aggression. It teaches you how to defend yourself, escape difficult situations, and use leverage to overcome someone bigger or stronger.

For a beginner, the best part is that you do not need to be fit, flexible, or experienced to start. Most classes are designed for complete beginners, and everyone remembers what it felt like to be new. You learn step by step, starting with basic movements, simple positions, and easy techniques.

Training is also very social. You work with partners, help each other improve, and quickly become part of a supportive community. Many people join for fitness or self-defence, but stay because of the friendships and confidence they build.

It is also a great workout without feeling like a normal gym session. You improve your fitness, coordination, balance, and mental focus while learning something useful and enjoyable.

The hardest part is usually just walking through the door for the first class. After that, most people realise it is much more welcoming, fun, and beginner-friendly than they expected.
